Penryn Athletic 3, Helston Reserves 3

PENRYN ATHLETIC showed excellent resolve in the face of adversity as they came from behind three times to draw 3-3 at home to Helston Reserves last Tuesday night, writes Matt Friday.

Goals from Jason Roberts, Russell May and Jackson Saunders cancelled out a Freddie Williams volley and Mike Hallibone’s double, whilst also ending a run of four successive home defeats to their opponents.

After a quiet start, Helston opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Jack Hannaford’s free-kick found Freddie Williams, who volleyed past Chris Symons from inside the box.

But the hosts were level 10 minutes later in a moment to forget for Helston keeper Ryan Cross. The visiting goalie missed his attempted clearing header, allowing Jason Roberts to slot into an empty net.

The sides made it to the interval on level terms, but Mike Hallibone restored Helston’s lead seconds into the second-half with a cool near-post finish.

Penryn twice came close to an equaliser, with a goalmouth scramble resulting in Cross stopping Liam Jarvis’s shot on the line, before Reggie May blazed over a few minutes later.

The hosts thought they had their reward in the 69th minute when Russell May headed in Roberts’ cross, only for Hallibone to fire Helston ahead for the third time barely two minutes later.

However a frantic five minutes was complete when Penryn levelled once again. Helston’s defence had hardly stopped celebrating when Reggie May sprinted clear, before squaring to Jackson Saunders who bundled home.

Both sides spent the final 15 minutes searching for a winner as the game became end-to end, but neither side could manage it, with Russell May coming closest when his header was cleared off the line.

Penryn: C Symons, E Jorey, Ru May (c), C Saunders, S Yendle, D Jarvis (J Saunders 58), L Jarvis (B Allen 74), M Willey, W Harding, Re May, J Roberts (A Prynn 76).

Penryn’s next match is at home to Illogan RBL Reserves on Saturday 9th September.
