Penryn 7, St Ives 10

In a match played as two 30-minute halves in wet conditions on Friday night, Western Counties League visitors St Ives built a 10-0 lead by the midway point of the second period, writes Ben Gilby.

Penryn, fielding a number of new players, defended strongly throughout and rallied with John Followell crashing over for a try after tapping and going from a penalty.

Despite Borough's excellent efforts, in the end, it was a 10-7 win for The Hakes, however Penryn's new coaching team saw some real positives to take out of the match.

Speaking after the match, Ian Morgan said: "Our focus in this game was defence, and ensuring we worked hard without the ball.

"Toby (Freeman – head coach) has installed a real passion for defence with the boys and it showed. St Ives had some quality players with at least six or seven having county honours, so for us to limit them to ten points and to get a score ourselves was quite pleasing."

β€œThe lads all work hard for each other and they are a pleasure to coach. I am sure we will see more and more development in our game as the weeks pass. Also, a big thanks to a good sized crowd that came out on a wet and windy evening during Falmouth Week.”

Penryn: 15) Paul Saberton, 14) George Mitchell, 13) Sean Johnson, 12) Andrew Seviour, 11) James Salisbury, 10) Mitch Vague, 9) Tomas Oliver, 1) Callum Degenhardt, 2) Kyle Gratrix, 3) Josh Goldsworthy, 4) Ben Trevaskis, 5) Hayden Wilkinson, 6 John Followell, 7) George Jones (capt), 8) Grant Randlesome.
