BEFORE kicking a ball in anger, two of Helston Athletic's new signings have been snaffled up by the county's big boys.

Rob Wearne, who made the short trip to Helston after top scoring for Falmouth last season, has moved to St Austell.

Full back Ed Timmons, also a Falmouth player last season, has signed for Bodmin Town.

The 28 year old Timmons said: "I'm competitive from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed, so to have the chance to win trophies with Bodmin was an absolute no-brainer for me.

Ed, who lives in Praze-an-Beeble, added: "Gilby (the manager Darren Gilbert) wants to win the treble and have a good run in the FA Vase. I also hope to play in the FA Cup, something I've never done before.

"I'd love to win the league more than anything and it's a great opportunity for me to play with some of the best technical players in Cornwall."

Timmons is one of several new arrivals at Priory Park this summer, with the likes of St Austell trio Ollie Brokenshire, Neil Slateford and Harry Evans among a clutch of signings that Gilbert has made.

"He said he has rated me very highly for several years, which is obviously nice to hear. He wants to put together a squad full of Cornish lads and try and win everything."

Of his brief stay at Helston, he said: "Steve Massey and Chris Strike were really impressive and they have a clear direction with their plan to win something by 2020. But I'll be 31 by then and my legs might be starting to go, so I couldn't turn down the chance to win something now."

Wearne, who scored 34 times for Town last year, will face stiff competition for a place in the starting line-up at St Austell, with former Helston strikers Liam Eddy and Mark Goldsworthy in free-scoring form last season.
