FALMOUTH Town's player of the season has joined Helston Athletic as the summer recruitment drive begins at Kellaway Parc.

The 30 year-old school teacher ended his long association with Town after agreeing terms with Steve Massey, the new boss at Helston.

"Tom liked what we are trying to do and bought into the project, which is to try and win the league and cups by 2020," said Steve, who will turn 60 next year.

"We're speaking to three or four more players from local clubs, as we want them to be based within a 30-minute drive of the ground if possible."

Massey's last management job was at Bideford with Sean Joyce in 2014, having finished a third spell in charge of Truro City. He has continued to watch matches at all levels in recent years and is excited about the new challenge.

"I'm really motivated and energised by the role - I've always had a vision of being in control of a football club and I honestly thought that would be at Truro City. But Pete Masters (the City chairman) and I see things very differently and while I have huge respect for him, we will never agree on how a club should be run.

"Helston have a fantastic community ethos and it is important that the players from all three men's teams should aspire to play in the first team. That will be the message that the second and third team managers will be putting across.

"I would never be disrespectful enough to tell a player he is not good enough for the first team. That is ultimately a decision they will make for themselves, but I'm quite comfortable with where we are at the moment.

"There'll be lots of opportunities for the players to show me what they can do.

"Yes, we'll be looking to make three or four more signings but it doesn't all have to happen before the start of the season. It will be a rebuilding job next season, looking towards our 20-20 vision."

Off the field plans are in place to revamp the dressing rooms, to include Wembley-style individual lockers for the players.

"It's important to make them feel a bit special," added Massey, who is looking to buy a property in the area.

Referring to the end of last season, in which Helston's first team conceded two matches because they were unable to raise a side, he added: "I think some of the players perhaps became a bit disillusioned. Sid Taylor and Richie Full did a fantastic job but everything in life reaches a ceiling and I think they had reached theirs.

"The core of the side is still here and if we combine effort and enthusiasm with ambition, we will be on the right track."
