A FOUNDER member of Wendron United Football Club has been recognised for his 40 years of service to the club.

Peter Thorne, who helped to set up the club in the late 1970s, won the award for Outstanding Services to Cornish football at the county FA's presentation evening at Truro's Alverton Manor on Friday.

He said: "I'm very proud of the award and we are continuing to develop the ground, with more plans in the pipeline. Although I received the award, there are several people who have contributed so much to the club and I could not have done it without them."

Peter managed the second XI, while Ray Pascoe took charge of the first team in the early days, before the club began to grow into a major force in Cornish football.

The youth section was set up in the late 1980s and there are now teams from under-7s up to under-18s. There is also an under-21 side, four men's teams playing in Saturday leagues and a Sunday side.
