Pictured this week is the Falmouth/Trescobeas Under 14 School football team, who retained the Schools' Under 14s Cup in 1960/61.

Former player Keith Rashleigh, who supplied the photograph, takes up the story.

"Our PT teachers took the team preparation very seriously and we played “Probables v. Possibles” matches for weeks after school on at least two days a week right through to the final.

"My first memory was playing against our next door neighbours Penryn School, who were based at the Falmouth Quarry in those days and played their matches at Falmouth Recreation Ground.

"The whole touchlines and goal lines were solid with pupils and teachers from both schools. An unbelievable sight and probably never repeated. I was on the wing and remember dodging the spectators as much as the full back! It was a terrific struggle which we eventually won with a goal by our skipper Terry Grayling by 3-2, after being 2-1 down at half time. "Terry was the centre half and the undoubted star of our team. Penryn had players like Peter Collins who later played in goal for such as Penzance. Leon Prynn who later played for Truro City before becoming Mawnan Smiths main man and Nigel Rowe was their Captain who had a successful career with Constantine and Falmouth Docks also Ken Plummer who went on to play Rugby for England no less.

"We had future outstanding rugby players for Falmouth too in Micky Clay and Arthur Williams. Ken Popperwell and myself went on to enjoy long football careers up to the South Western League level. Mike Stacey played briefly at Falmouth Town.

"Micky Clark emigrated to Vancouver. Canada and I know for a fact he has shown visitors to his home this very picture! Roger Scanlon, who like me was an “underage” player, also did very well in local football. Alan Ruse was also a fine cricketer.

"Our goalkeeper Roger Garth was literally a giant (the joke was he took his Birth Certificate to all the games!) who would kick the ball from one end of the pitch to the other!

"The Penryn match was by far the most difficult game and from memory we beat Humphrey Davy. Penzance then Hayle School in the final very comfortably."
