PORTHLEVEN have moved quickly to appoint their new manager just days after the resignation of Kev Richards.

They have unveiled the man in charge as Alan Carey, who enjoyed six successful seasons with the club in the late 1990s.

Speaking to the Helston Packet, Carey said: "I've always had a feeling for Porthleven since they gave me an opportunity in the 90s.

"I'm back here to help them realise what they want to achieve. The aim is to get into the Premier Division and that's what I'm here to do."

Carey, who has since enjoyed a successful six-year spell at Bodmin Town, as well as stints with Falmouth Town and St Blazey among other clubs, feels that they need three or four players to challenge for promotion.

"We need a squad of 17 or 18. There were times last season when they were a bit short for some away games and over the course of the season you need enough players to cover that."

Outgoing manager Richards has taken charge of Newquay-based Godolphin and Carey is aware that one or two players may go with him to play at higher level.

"I'd never stand in the way of a player trying to better themselves in a higher league, but I'll be aiming to retain as many as possible because they're all lads that I'd want in my squad," said Carey.

The new boss has recruited former professional Wayne Quinn to take pre-season training sessions, which will begin on June 20. He also hopes to bring in other ex-professionals to take sessions.

"My adrenaline is pumping for the challenge. I want to take them as far as I can and it's not going to be a one-season wonder. However long it takes, I want to get them where they want to be, back in the top division and in national competitions like the FA Vase," he added.

Paul Parfitt, director of football development at the club, said: "Alan's footballing CV is second to none. We wanted a winner and that's what he is, having won numerous trophies."
