Mawnan Res 3, Wendron III 1

JUST a week after Mawnan won the Whirlwind Sports Trelawny League’s Dunn Cup, Mawnan Reserves lifted the Arthur Pearce Cup after defeating cupholders Wendron III 3-1 in the final at Illogan last night.

Wendron, who had won the previous two finals, made an impressive start in pursuit of a hat-trick of victories and punished a sluggish Mawnan outfit with the opening goal in the sixth minute when they broke swiftly from deep in their own half and opened up the defence for Craig Owens to hook the ball in at the far post.

A disjointed Mawnan failed to make any impression in the opening half as Wendron dominated possession, but the second half saw a complete transformation in fortunes. Mawnan began to get forward in numbers and the pressure resulted in a 59th minute equaliser when Liam Dent squeezed his way through to lob his shot over the keeper.

Within minutes Mawnan stunned Wendron when they took the lead after Fraser Harris delivered the perfect cross for Dent to finish in style.

Wendron escaped conceding a third goal when Josh Kelly’s shot thumped against the keeper and rebounded off the post back into the keeper’s arms, but shortly afterwards Mawnan clinched victory when Jake Joyce crossed for Dent to hammer his shot into the corner of the net to complete his hat-trick and a remarkable victory.
