Helston make the short journey to Falmouth for their opening cricket fixture of the season in the 40/40 Premier Cup on Saturday, writes Matt Dixon.

It will be the sixth season as captain for 24-year-old Dan Jenkin, who is hoping to consolidate his team’s Premier League status after a successful first campaign in the top flight last year.

“Realistically we’ll be struggling to break into the top two or three, but we gave all the top teams good games last year so we’ll be aiming to do that again.”

They will be without spinning all-rounder Lionel Vaaltyn this year, but have replaced him with fellow South African Eben Koekemoer, a 19-year-old seamer who bats in the middle order.

Batsman Guy Leathley has returned from Falmouth to take his place alongside brother Ross, while Jenkin is also hopeful that young pace bowler Tommy Sturgess will be available for some matches. Sturgess played for Surrey second XI at the end of last year and hopes to continue his development with them this summer. He is also set to make his debut for Cornwall on Sunday when they travel to Banbury to play Oxfordshire in the Unicorns Knockout Trophy.

Dan added: “If we can finish mid-table and have another cup run, I’ll be delighted.” he added.
