Porthleven 3, Wendron Utd 1

THE only thing that is predictable about Porthleven this season is that they are unpredictable.

After some eye-catching results earlier in the season, they have misfired like a car in need of a service in recent months, but not so at Gala Parc on Good Friday.

It was engaging rather than exciting fare in this Division 1 West derby, with little in the way of goalmouth incident, but plenty of endeavour and the occasional moment of real quality.

Ryan Tresidder’s delicious threaded through-ball put in Chris Mulroy but Port keeper Ethan Fearn touched enough of the ball to prevent his angled shot from going in.

Jack Webber then went close at the other end when he stabbed a Dan Greet cross just wide, but the hosts took the lead after 33 minutes when Jowan Shainberg’s cross was headed home by Rob Carey.

Port scored a crucial second goal three minutes before the break, when Michael O’Neill gave the ball away and Webber’s crisp pass found Greet, who shot home from 20 yards.

The impressive Greet was replaced by Charlie Young early in the second period and his introduction continued the home side’s dominance in midfield.

Wendron keeper Ben Mitchell made a fine save to deny Matt Fox midway through the second half, before Carey missed an open goal from close range after Young’s cross had been mishit into his path by Dan Hindmarch.

With the game entering stoppage time Charlie Clark gave Wendron brief hope with a goal, but Port promptly went down the other end and scored when Mitchell could only parry Jamie Greet’s shot and Carey tucked away the rebound.
