FALMOUTH will play at their highest level for many years next season after securing the Cornwall/Devon League title on Saturday.

They have spent almost 15 years in the division after promotion from Cornwall 1 in 2003, but this will go down as a vintage year at the Recreation Ground.

Head coach Graham Whitmore said: "I'm very proud to be a part of what we have achieved. The players have been fantastic, showing focus, determination and spirit all season.

"We know there will be many tough battles next year but we will show loyalty to the players who have taken us there and embrace the opportunity to test ourselves," said the Truro School teacher.

The Eagles have lost just twice this season and capped a remarkable season with a 103-0 victory over Bodmin in a game which was curtailed to just over 60 minutes by the referee.

Despite the meek opposition, Falmouth's dashing flair, ambition and pace was a perfect reflection of their ethos this season.

"We're grateful to Bodmin for fulfilling the fixture - they were short of players but it enabled us to enjoy our day in winning the league. Second row Jon Baglow's try from the halfway line typified what we've been about this year," said Whitmore.

"It will be a process of consolation next season. The players are enjoying our brand of rugby and we will continue to do that, coupled with a fierce enthusiasm to defend. It has been a collective, team effort and the result of real ambition among the players."

Falmouth will take on Old Dunstonians in their annual touring match on Saturday (3pm), while Penryn host them on Good Friday (5.30pm).

Falmouth finish their season at Topsham on Saturday week.

l Penryn hold their Easter Sevens tournament on Sunday. The action starts at midday and there is still spaces available for teams to enter.
