For their penultimate league game in this season’s Greene King IPA Championship, the Cornish Pirates visit Richmond on Saturday (ko 3pm).

The eleventh-placed home side have recorded four wins in their first Championship season, including a 26-23 victory against the Pirates at the Mennaye Field in December.

It is still mathematically possible for the sixth-placed Pirates to reach the play-offs, so Saturday’s is clearly an important game, with it likely that a large gathering of their supporters - boosted my many exiles - will descend upon the Richmond Athletic Ground.

There is just a single change in the Cornish Pirates starting XV from the one that featured in the 34-17 points win against Doncaster Knights last time out, as a fit again Tom Channon returns at hooker in place of the injured Jack Innard.

Cornish Pirates’ coach Gavin Cattle was disappointed to lose to Richmond at home, saying: “Having created a lot of opportunities in that game, especially in the first half, it was disappointing that we didn’t convert the chances, so the task this weekend is to keep our focus and this time finish off what we create. With an outside chance of making the play-offs, all we can do is to keep on trucking and see what happens.”

Gavin added: “To their credit Richmond have done a superb job and recruited quite smartly. They also have a really good team spirit, a hunger to perform well, and fully committed keep going right to the very end.”
