Falmouth Rugby Club are waiting to find out whether they will be awarded the league title, although they are already mathematically champions.

They have already won promotion from the Cornwall and Devon league to the Western Counties West division, but due to the fielding of an unregistered player, they are due to be deducted 5 points.

Club Chairman James Instance said: “It is oversight, there was no malice in it, we’ve held our hands up, admitted the mistake we’ve made and because of that we will have five points taken off this season or the beginning of next.

“I would rather they were taken off this season, the offence happened this season and I wouldn’t want it to have an impact on us next season.”

Although the fate of the championship may still be undecided, coach Graham Whitmore said: “We’ve still got three league games to play and our rational is to complete our season as best we can, irrespective of winning the league.

“Success breeds success and that’s helped with the progression of the side.”

As well as the performances on the pitch, Whitmore thinks the off-field attitudes of the players have also contributed to the achievements of the side.

“The boys are playing for each other, they work for each other, they enjoy each other's company and there is a great team culture with the club.” Whitmore said.

Having recently lost to St Austell, who play in the division Falmouth are set to be promoted to next season, Whitmore acknowledges that although it will be a challenge, the club is capable of competing in the league.

“We certainly feel we are going to need to do some significant work on the scrummage in order to make ourselves as competitive as we can be.

“It is more of the same, we just have to do it better.”

Falmouth can become champions regardless of having points deducted if they win their penultimate game of the season in two weeks' time against Bodmin.

The club will hold a reunion of ex-Falmouth players alongside supporters for the game, so the team can celebrate alongside old players and supporters alike.
