For Falmouth man Marek Churcher, time is a luxury.

Whilst managing Truro College’s rugby team, he is also a coach at Exeter Chiefs’ academy, manager of National League 2 side Redruth RFC and the backs coach for the Cornwall team, writes Harry Adams.

It would have been an easy path out of rugby after, whilst playing for Penryn, Churcher snapped his arm and bicep in a horror injury while playing for the county side in 2009.

Slowly wind down the career after a big injury and wave goodbye to the game.

However after achieving a RFU level 4 coaching certificate, the 34 year-old is still as involved in rugby as much now as ever, through the coaching of Cornwall’s young rugby talent.

“There are more jobs in rugby than simply playing rugby,” Marek said.

“We give the boys an education alongside the rugby, give them an education that gives them life experience.”

With the current first team touring Canada, having just won their first game 45-19, it is easy to see why any budding rugby talent would want play for Marek at the college and try to pave a route into the professional game.

“The elite from Truro College get selected for Exeter Chiefs,” Marek explained.

“If you’ve got any ambition to go on and further your rugby, you come to Truro College. It's more than just about the rugby, it’s about the lifestyle. We tell the lads that if they are organised and committed, they will do well. If they're not, they'll struggle."

Students at the college are playing the highest level of Under 18 Rugby as well as completing their education, whether that is BTEC or A Levels.

Club teams may look at the college as a poacher, scouting their best players and moving them to the college team, but Marek refutes that.

“There are 88 ex or current Truro College students are playing in Cornish teams,” said Marek.

Whilst the college currently has 78 players on their books, only eight don’t play for a club team in Cornwall. The most important thing for Marek is that the boys are playing rugby.

“We as a college never stop anyone playing at the weekend, the boys are making their decision based on what’s best for them. They have to decide what’s more important for them. As a player you have to become a bit selfish.”

“We want the best for the boys and the best for Cornwall Rugby.”

Between his commitments to Redruth, Exeter Chiefs and the college, Marek occasionally pops down to the Cornish Pirates to coach with Gavin Cattle and Alan Paver.

In May 2018 he will marry his fiancee Ellen Kennedy at Mawnan Church. There'll be plenty of rugby players at the wedding.
