FALMOUTH Eagles need just two more wins to be crowned Cornwall/Devon League champions.

Victory at nearest rivals Saltash on Saturday means they now have a handsome 18-point lead at the top and with a home match against bottom club Tamar Saracens this weekend, the title could be secured at Tavistock on March 25.

Coach Graham Whitmore said: "We're just keeping our feet on the ground and putting the message to the boys to complete what we've started.

"It's important that we continue the momentum going into next year, when we will have lots of difficult tests if we go into the division above. There is a level of expectation of how we can perform now and if we don't keep pushing forward, we'll be overtaken."

The Eagles have lost just once this season and Whitmore says the recruitment of Matt Brewer, Dan Hubble and Owen Hambly has been instrumental.

"They have been great assets and all the lads have become more mature players who are confident in our system and who enjoy each other's company. They are a good social group and that culture of supporting each other means they can achieve pretty special things," he added.

Indeed, the prospect of a double-winning season is very much alive, with a trip to higher league St Austell in the semi-finals of the Cornwall Cup on Saturday week. Wadebridge host Truro in the other semi on the same day.

"That will be fantastic test for us and I hope we can take a strong side for that game because it'll give us a good indication of where we are," said Graham.

As is always the case though, the next match is the most important and if Falmouth find their familiar expansive game on Saturday, Tamar Saracens supporters might be better off propping up the bar for 80 minutes.
