Penryn 10, Lanner 22

PENRYN were left smarting on Saturday as Lanner completed an unlikely league double in often wild conditions at the Memorial Ground.

The hosts would have been desperate to avenge a 24-22 defeat earlier in the season but a depleted Borough were humbled once again.

Coach Chris Lea said: “Sadly it was a loss in the wind and rain. Credit to Lanner for doing a lot for their cause of staying in the division for next season.”

The visitors established a healthy lead at half time after Nick Prout and Dan Job crossed, one of which Prout converted as Penryn failed to register any first half points.

Grant Randlesome powered over despite the attentions of two defenders to reduce the arrears after the break, with Matt Horton converting and then kicking a penalty to bring the points gap to just two.

However, Lanner had other ideas and unconverted tries by Prout and wing Jordan Hood secured a bonus point victory for the visitors, whose eighth win of the season has all but guaranteed their status in the division for next season.

Lea added: “On the home front, there was a good debut for Gareth Crothers on at six. He made a real impact and was awarded man of the match, just shading young gun Matt Healy who put in another good performance alongside his team mates.

“We have made good signings prior to the end of season cut-off date and we have plenty to build on as the last six games are played out.

“The new players have fitted in well with the Penryn players who have been the backbone of the side this season.

Penryn face a tough trip to Paignton on Saturday. Their game against Withycombe was abandoned by the referee on Saturday after a mass brawl broke out between the forwards after an hour.
