Helston 29, Newquay Hornets 8

Helston derailed Newquay's Cornwall 1 title bid with a stunning display at the King George V Memorial Ground on Saturday.

The home side's fourth victory of the campaign, which has been up and running since the Cornwall League was split into two divisions at Christmas, was arguable their best of the season.

Backs coach L J Collick said: "We asked the boys for a performance today. And that's exactly what they did. It was possibly the best performance of the season so far. The pack played their part and provided the platform.

"The backs executed the moves extremely well, especially when you look at the conditions in the second half. The score line reflected the hard work by everyone."

Opting to play into the wind in the first half it was not long before Wade Toy raced away, scoring in the corner. The visitors pressed from the restart and after withstanding 20 minutes of constant pressure.

A quick turnover saw Tom Townsend break the line and put Wade Toy in for his second try of the day. Newquay were only able to respond through a Kyle Plummer penalty in the first half. With the weather changing, both sides struggled to play their usual free flowing game.

It was Helston however who dealt best with conditions. Ten minutes into the second half evergreen Ewan Cowie crashed over for Paul Saberton to add the extras.

James Wilson and Calvin Warwick who had great games for the hosts, attacked at every opportunity.

And it wasn't long before the powerhouse Matt Holland picked his line and darted in from 30 metres out.

A spirited Newquay team never gave up and were rewarded when Ollie Davies touchdown in the corner, but it was Helston who owned the day and Paul Saberton capped it off with a superb try.
