PENRYN issued a statement of intent for the second half of the season with an 80-0 demolition of Tamar Saracens in Cornwall/Devon League on Saturday.

The Borough have had a turbulent time this season, struggling to cope with an extensive injury list, but they roared back into action at the Memorial Ground.

Coach Chris Lea said: "We went into this game knowing that building on the Boxing Day result was important in re-igniting the second half of the season.

"Within 10 minutes, confidence from the first score got the team probably producing their best team performance of the season, even though it was against one of the teams struggling in the league."

There were several contenders for the Muddy Beach Man of the match award, which was won by second row Grant Randlesome for his hat-trick of tries. Colin Campbell also claimed a treble and there were two tries apiece for James Salisbury and Andrew Seviour.

Penryn will face a much sterner test on Saturday at Tavistock, who only lost 9-5 at promotion-chasing Paignton.

Once they have negotiated the trip to Devon, it will be all eyes on the Memorial Ground again next week, when they host leaders Falmouth in what will be an unmissable encounter.

The Eagles have a massive game before that though, when they entertain Paignton on Saturday. Falmouth have inflicted Paignton's only defeat this season, winning 16-12 back in September.

If they are able to come through the next two games unscathed, it would take a brave man to bet against them taking the title in April.
