AS the Cornish football season reaches the halfway mark, Matt Dixon takes a look at the story so far.

SWPL Premier

Falmouth Town - current position: 9th

One of the key aspects of football that keeps players and supporters coming back for more is its unpredictability.

Falmouth have had that in spades so far this season, producing some memorable wins including a 4-1 success at home to Plymouth Argyle and a 3-0 victory at Godolphin, but also having the occasional horror show such as their 6-0 defeat to Saltash and their League Cup exit at lower league neighbours Wendron Utd.

Striker Rob Wearne is enjoying a good season, having scored 16 league goals to leave him sitting sixth in the top scorer's list.

Town have reached the third round of the Senior Cup for the first time in five years. They will host Camelford early in the New Year for a place in the quarter-finals.

Next three fixtures: Plymouth Parkway (home, tomorrow); Helston Athletic (away, Boxing Day); Witheridge (home, Saturday, January 7).

Season so far: 7/10

Helston Athletic - current position: 14th

Helston have coped well with a huge change of personnel from last season's first team.

Regular squad members Mattie Buchan, Tyler Oliver, Joel Allen and Gemell Mills are all teenagers, replacing some of the more experienced hands who have dropped into the second team.

Their highlight so far has been their debut in the FA Vase, winning their first ever match in the competition at Portishead before going down 2-1 at home to an excellent Team Solent side, who went on to beat Bodmin Town in the next round.

They are in the last 16 of the League Cup and will entertain Tiverton Town on Monday, January 2 for a quarter-final berth.

Next three fixtures: Bodmin Town (away, tomorrow); Falmouth Town (home, Boxing Day); Saltash Utd (home, Saturday, December 31).

Season so far: 6/10

SWPL Division 1 West

Penryn Athletic - current position: 2nd

Paul Murray took over as manager from long-serving Steve Jewell at the end of October and has taken the Kernick side into second spot behind runaway leaders Sticker.

Penryn have been free-scoring under Murray but have suffered two derby defeats to Wendron and Porthleven in recent weeks.

They are in the quarter-finals of the Charity Cup, where they will face Polperro early in February.

Top scorers Luke Brabyn and David Broglino have both scored ten league goals apiece.

Next three fixtures: Plymouth Marjons (away, tomorrow); Illogan RBL (away, Boxing Day); Penzance (home, Saturday December 31).

Season so far: 8/10

Porthleven - current position: 7th

The Fishermen are having a splendid season, after a troubled campaign last year.

Kev Richards has assembled an excellent young squad and in Jack Webber they have a midfielder who is on the verge of selection for the England under-18s squad.

Their highlight so far was a tremendous 4-1 Senior Cup victory over Godolphin and they will be confident of reaching the last eight having drawn mid-table Combination League side Holmans in the third round.

Next three fixtures: Vospers Oak Villa (away, tomorrow); Wendron Utd (away, Boxing Day); Sticker (home, Monday, January 2).

Season so far: 9/10

Wendron Utd - current position: 8th

Like Penryn, they lost their manager in October when Charlie Davis joined Falmouth Town. His assistant Jack Greenwood has taken over and done an excellent job, although they have shipped nine goals in their last two games in defeats at Plymouth Marjons and Holsworthy.

Their highlight so far was a 2-1 home win over Falmouth Town in the League Cup, but their league win by the same scoreline over Penryn Athletic would come a close second.

They are in the quarter-finals of the Charity Cup but face a difficult trip to Mousehole in February.

Next three fixtures: Mousehole (home, tomorrow); Porthleven (home, Boxing Day); Wadebridge (away, Saturday, December 31.

Season so far: 7/10
