Porthleven 4, Godolphin 1

PORTHLEVEN produced their most memorable result for several seasons in dumping their higher league opponents out of the Senior Cup on Saturday.

Given the size difference between the two sets of players, it looked like men versus boys at times, but it was the boys who triumphed, producing some splendid football on the immaculate, vast pastures of Gala Parc.

Midfielders Dan Hindmarch, Heydon Dark and Jack Webber were all particularly eye-catching for the hosts.

Max Roberts celebrated his recent inclusion in the Cornwall under-18s squad with a tremendous display at the heart of the Fishermen’s defence – made all the more impressive after he was booked just 11 minutes into the match.

Moments after Roberts’ yellow card, Porthleven took the lead.

Webber set Hindmarch away down the left flank and he made ground and earned a corner. From the set piece, Godolphin failed to clear the ball and Dark was on hand to shoot left footed into the bottom corner.

It was a similar pattern of play that almost yielded a second goal. From a Godolphin corner Matt Fox picked up the loose ball and fed Webber, who in turn found Hindmarch on the left. He beat the full back again and hammered in a low cross which was deflected just wide of the post.

Jarod Sims then shot just wide at the other end before Hindmarch was at it again. He jinked into the box but dragged his shot towards the back post where it was turned back across goal, but Webber was unable to make contact despite a desperate lunge with the goal at his mercy.

Eight minutes before the break Godolphin took a quick free kick in midfield and played a slick move down the left. When the low cross came in Phil Lowry hammered his shot against the crossbar.

The outstanding Hindmarch then burst into the penalty area and as the keeper rushed out, he shot just over the bar. He was then left prostrate on the ground by the keeper’s challenge amidst claims of a penalty from the home players.

Moments later Port grabbed a crucial second goal right on the stroke of half time.

Webber’s effort was deflected for a corner and from Hindmarch’s set piece, the teenage midfield dynamo produced a bullet header from close range to double their lead.

There was a breathless start to the second half.

Godolphin pulled one back after 53 minutes when Alex Cole was allowed to drift into the left side of the area and shoot low into the corner.

Port stood firm however and three minutes later Hindmarch scored the goal that his first half efforts had deserved.

He raced down the inside left channel, shrugged off the attentions of his marker and kept his composure to slot past keeper Josh Gilbert and give the hosts real belief of a cup upset.

Midway through the half a corner from Webber was turned in by Roberts at the back post and the Fishermen were virtually out of sight at 4-1.

Hindmarch was eventually withdrawn by boss Kev Richards with ten minutes to go, acknowledging the hearty applause of spectators as he trudged off.

He had played a huge part in his team’s fantastic display - a victory which brought to memory some of the glory days enjoyed at Gala Parc at the turn of the century.
