Helston 5, Hayle 29

On an autumnal afternoon at King George V playing field, both partisan and neutral supporters alike, were treated to some great running rugby in this Cornwall League derby.

It was Hayle however who continued their unbeaten run. Amassing a points tally of 209 going into this game, the visiting pack proved a tough task for the home side, who are improving with each fixture.

Helston head coach John Court said: "I'm extremely happy with how the lads reacted in the second half. We've had a hard couple of fixtures back to back, Which can only galvanise us as we move forward as a team."

Fred Carter opened the scoring for Hayle after 12 minutes, swiftly followed by a penalty.

With 25 minutes on the clock there was a controversial try when a passionate home crowd believed a forward pass had taken place before Ashley White ran in the touch-down.

This incensed the Helston players, who attempted to come back with some good phases of play themselves. It was not long before a great line break saw Ben Lenderyou finish in the corner.

The game once again swayed towards the visitors, who with the wind behind them struck back with a superb catch and drive this time for Phil Tonkin to score.

The last play of the first half and the most comical of moments saw Helston attempt to clear their lines, only for a mix up of communication and a fumbled ball, allowing Gareth Mankee to seize on the moment.

There was some heated discussions at half time handed out by the new, vibrant coaching set-up at Helston.

The home side looking a different team in the second half both in attack and defence. Unfortunately, all the points were scored in the first half as Hayle comfortably maintained their 100 per cent record.
