A GROUP of friends have formed Falmouth Athletico, who are competing in the Cornwall Sunday League this season.

Zach Maunder, aged 21, and his friend Jack Froud, play for different local teams in the Trelawny League on Saturdays and decided that they would like to have a game together on Sundays.

Zach said: "We've had the idea for a while and we've got it all started thanks to Lee Warren and Kathy St Quintin from the Games Room, who have sponsored us."

They have played three games to date, losing to Carlyon Arms and Shortlanesend in the league, but beating Mullion 7-5 in a cup thriller.

Athletico are in one of three four-team groups and are aiming to finish in the top two in order to progress to the next stage.

Harry Mcmellon scored twice for them on Sunday in their 4-2 defeat to Shorlanesend at the Dracaena Centre, but the hosts also missed two penalties.

"It wasn't our day in front of goal," said Zach, who plays for Falmouth DC on Saturdays.
