Camborne 56, Salisbury 19

Camborne racked up a half century of points for the second successive week to march on at the top of table undefeated with a nine try demolition of Salisbury.

‘Town’ therefore made it six wins from six National League 3 starts and with Old Redcliffians losing they now head into this weekend’s day off with a six points cushion at the summit.

Leigh Hocking came in for a start at prop whilst Brad Howe began at No 8 with James Goldsworthy on the flank. In a late change David Mankee dropped out with a slight injury to be replaced by Rhys Brownfield.

Before the match there was an impeccably observed minute’s silence in memory of popular former Club Chairman Roger ‘Dicky’ Bray who had passed away earlier in the day.

Playing down the slope the Cherry & Whites then overwhelmed their shell shocked visitors in a devastating 1st quarter that saw them go 25-0 up with the try bonus point in the bag.

After a 1st minute Rhys Brownfield penalty the opening try quickly followed with left wing Josh Semmens going over wide out. Soon after Goldsworthy broke the defensive line before handing on to a marauding Sam Matavesi who romped in from fifty metres. Fly half Brownfield added the extras and minutes later Joel Matavesi took a flat pass from scrum half Taron Peacock to show his strength in crashing over for 20-0.

On 20 minutes Howe dotted down the extra pointer from a pushover at a five metre scrum and minutes later after a fruitless rare visiting attack flanker Matavesi stormed over again with young Brownfield adding the extras for 32-0.

As the interval neared Salisbury were rewarded for a good spell of pressure when their right wing dived in at the corner flag for a try that went unconverted.

The visitors improved in the second period and though centre Matavesi added his second try in the turnstile corner superbly improved from the touchline by Brownfield the Wiltshire side countered with a converted score for 39-12.

Inside the final quarter home lock Ben Kemp was halted inches short and replacement No 8 Dave Roberts followed up to burrow in from close range but Salisbury again hit back with a well worked seven pointer that gave them some hope of a consolation losing bonus point.

That was not to be however as the Cherry & Whites finished strongly running in two more slick tries from right wing Murray Westren after a storming Howe run and replacement wing Tom Townsend set up by centre Jack Simmons. Brownfield converted Westren’s score to add further gloss to an emphatic victory.
