A GROUP of students have formed their own football team which will compete in the Kernow Youth League next season.

Falmouth Flamingos have been set up by lads from Falmouth School, who have assembled an under-15s squad.

Victoria Sadler, mother of 15 year-old Joe, who has been instrumental in its development, said: “They wanted to have autonomy and they have raised sponsorship, designed their own kit and delivered a presentation to parents and players.

“With the help of their teacher Tommy Matthews, they have secured the school pitch for training and matches and they have worked completely independently to create a new youth team in Falmouth.”

Joe, together with friend Rob Brown, has been the driving force behind the Flamingos, who have already assembled 15 players ahead of their first competitive game in September.

Rob’s parents Louise and Jim Brown held a meeting at their house to get the idea off the ground and the boys later held a presentation at Falmouth Town Football Club to explain the venture in more detail.

Victoria added: “It’s really helping all the lads to bond and develop grassroots foundations. It’s a very organic process and I feel very passionately about what they are trying to achieve.

“The boys are leading the way –- they know what they want and they are inspirational to other youngsters.”

AGame and Premier Tiles have already agreed to sponsor the new club and there are plans to get more businesses on board.
