RUGBY teams and fans from across the UK will be descending on Newquay Sports Centre this weekend for this year’s hotly anticipated Newquay Rugby 7s tournament.

With 70 teams, comprising 1,200 men and women set to battle it out over the weekend, and further 1,000 spectators anticipated to attend, the usual calm of Newquay Sports Centre’s grounds will be smashed by the sound of tactical team talks, tough tackles and cheering crowds, all willing their teams on to victory. And for the elite, a place in the regional play offs in Exeter on July 10.

Sharp’s Brewery, based in Rock, North Cornwall, is the lead sponsor again this year, and the brewery has ensured that Sharp’s rugby ambassador, and former England captain Phil Vickery will be attending the event on Saturday to welcome teams from across the UK, including last year’s winning men’s British Army team, and the women's winning team, the South Wales Dragons.

Phil Vickery is well known for his absolute passion and love for the game, at any level, and he will be watching the action on Saturday and meeting rugby fans. The Raging Bull will also be re-uniting with Sharp’s Doom Platoon, for coaching and support.

As a key part in the Sharp’s Brewery ‘There’s an adventure brewing’ campaign Phil will also be laying down the gauntlet with a special RFU passing machine challenge, inviting contenders to top his skills and be in with the chance of winning a rugby adventure of a lifetime.

The ultimate rugby adventure offers six winners, plus a guest each, the chance to win an all-expense paid rugby weekend, watching a rugby game with the Raging Bull himself.

Those stepping up to challenge Phil will automatically be entered in the ultimate Rugby Adventure competition, with Sharp’s set to announce a local winner at the Rugby 7s tournament.

Newquay 7s organiser, Andy Hawken, said: “We are thrilled to have Sharp’s Brewery sponsoring the event again this year, which will be bigger and better than ever. The Newquay Sports Centre playing fields offer the perfect grounds for this tournament and we have great teams coming from across the UK to play elite rugby. With lots of entertainment throughout the day, food and drink refreshments on offer, families and rugby fans will be watching great rugby in the sun.”

Sharp’s Brewery Rugby Ambassador Phil Vickery said: "It’s always great to come home to Cornwall and I’m really looking forward to the Newquay 7s tournament, meeting the players and watching great rugby. I have no doubt that I’ll see some real Cornish spirit and passionate performances out there on the field, with every player getting stuck in.”
