This week's Golden Oldies picture is of Falmouth Grammar School's rugby team from 1948/9. The pitch on which these boys first encountered rugby is still there at Tregenver Road, now used by Falmouth RFC. It is thought that all of the boys and their master Mr Jack Searle, played for Falmouth or Penryn during their careers. Several of them later played at senior level for Cornwall and Roger Hosen played for England on ten occasions, including a tour to New Zealand and Australia in 1963. Mr Searle had returned from service in the Second World War to teach at his old school. He was later to become headmaster of Northampton Grammar School, where a member of his staff was Roger Hosen! At least eight of the boys became teachers and there were three local businessmen, one architect, one RAF officer and one banker. Mr T L Morris, the headmaster, later became Mayor of Falmouth. Back row (L-R): Mr N V Pearson (master), Robert Toy, Rob Hold, David Hancock, Kim Marshall, David Trevarthen, Gerald Andrew, Paul Barnicoat, Mr J R Searle (master). Front row (L-R): Clive Barnicoat, Roger Hosen, Derek Vincent, Mr T L Morris (headmaster), Bill Braddick, John Cobner, Raymond Plummer, Geoffrey Prewett and Gerald Pentecost.
