MULLION Football Club’s gallant attempt to stage their Jolly’s Combination League match against St

Ives was abandoned at half time on Saturday.

With two heavy downpours in the first half – the second of which was hail – the referee deemed the

pitch unplayable for the second period.

Mullion boss Kev Richards said: “In my opinion he made the correct decision because it was

becoming a skating rink. He has to ensure the safety of the players and it had become dangerous

after the two downpours.”

Richards added that the game was “50-50” to go ahead before the start, but both he and St Ives boss

Alan Spencer-Smith had agreed to get the match underway.

It was only the third game in charge for Richards, who rejoined the club together with coach Martin

Pennington and assistant Dave Leonard after previous boss Alan Carey resigned and took up the

vacant post at St Blazey.

Richards had guided Mullion to the league title last year, but stood down after the club’s bid to join

the South Western Peninsula League was rejected.

He explained that Clifden Parc outfit are now addressing the reasons why they were turned down

and decided to take on the job again because he wanted to take the club forward.

“The three of us went out and watched a few games and got itchy feet, so when we were asked it

was good to get involved again. The players seem delighted to see us come back and we’ll try and

work with them to get them playing how we want them to.”

Can he repeat the feat of last year and win the title again this season?

“We’re in the mix, seven points behind the leaders with a game in hand. We’ll do our best to pick up

as many points as we can and see where it takes us.”

With a drier weather forecast this week, Mullion can look forward to another home game on

Saturday, this time against local rivals Porthleven.
