PENRYN'S attempt at a great escape from the foot of the Western Counties table suffered a setback this week after prolific winger Alex Ducker signed for Camborne.

Ducker, who scored six tries in four league games for Borough after joining from Redruth in December, scored a last minute touchdown to earn victory for his new club at Bideford on Saturday.

Penryn coach Paul Trevaskis said: "Obviously we're disappointed that he's gone, we'd have hoped he stayed with us a bit longer but we can't compete with the big boys and he's had his head turned.

"We wish him well, we've helped him to get his career back on track and we only had a gentlemen's agreement with him to play for us, so we'll move on and be ready for the next game."

That will be at home to Torquay Athletic, who are in fourth spot after a 29-13 home win over Wadebridge on Saturday.

Penryn's game at Crediton was postponed and Trevaskis admits that the timing of the Christmas break has not necessarily helped his side.

"We were on a bit of a roll so it's been a bit frustrating, but we're just glad to be back in contention after many people had written us off. We're still bottom of the table, but there's a lot of rugby to be played yet and we're focused on staying in this league."

Torquay beat Borough 41-22 back in September, but after three league wins in their last five games, plus a Boxing Day victory over Falmouth, the Memorial Ground faithful will be hoping for more success on Saturday.

Indeed, the last time Penryn lost at home was at the beginning of November, when they went down 38-17 to league leaders Kingsbridge.

Trevaskis has a full squad to select from for the match, which kicks off at 2.15pm.

Falmouth are entering a crucial stage of their Cornwall/Devon League promotion push. On Saturday they travel to Plymouth Argaum, who they beat by just one point in the reverse fixture in September.

After that, they entertain second-placed Bude, followed by a trip to third-placed St Ives. Defeats to the two Cornish sides would all but put an end to their title hopes.
