Bideford 16, Camborne 17
Camborne left it late to claim a vital away win at Bideford courtesy of an unconverted Alex
Ducker try deep in injury time.
This was a decisive intervention by the winger who signed for the Cherry & Whites from Penryn during the week
and with all of the South West One leader’s rivals games off, the gap at the top is now eleven points.
For the trip up the Atlantic Highway ‘Town’ switched Rhys Brownfield to full back with fit again skipper Steve Kenward resuming at centre whilst upfront Tony Whittle returned at lock with young Andrius Zachorovas starting at prop.
The pitch at Bideford was in excellent order despite the heavy rain and the home side led 3-
0 early on.
The visitors then took the lead on 28 minutes with a superb team try. Slick handling created
the overlap for the outstanding Brownfield to come up into the line and cross wide out.
As the interval neared Bideford got their noses back in front with an unconverted try through
their forwards and then repeated the dose in time added on for a 13-5 half time advantage.
Soon after the resumption a penalty stretched the home lead to eleven points but Camborne
swiftly replied with a converted try. From a lineout catch and drive the visitors controlled the
ball and eventually flanker Neil Stanleick was forced over. Brownfield slotted the extras for
16-12.
For much of the remainder of the game the visitors pinned Bideford back with flanker James
Goldsworthy excelling but dogged defence and handling errors prevented any further
scoring.
In deteriorating conditions and with time almost up ‘Town’ patiently went through several
phases of attack eventually working the overlap to send over Ducker for the all important five
pointer.
Though the conversion went wide the referee duly sounded the final whistle to the delight of
the large number of travelling Camborne supporters.
