Porthleven 0, Wendron Utd 2

NEW Porthleven boss Charlie Young paraded three new signings from Mullion but they were unable

to prevent Wendron taking the derby spoils at Gala Parc on Boxing Day.

Young himself was in the starting line-up, as was George Molcher, Liam Hunter and Luke Hunter.

The Fishermen conceded two soft goals in the first half and although they had more of the play in the second half, they could not arrest their poor run which has seen them lying perilously close to the foot of the table.

Early signs were good for the hosts when Liam Hunter set up Ryan Trathen, whose shot was deflected wide.

James Stocker was then denied by Jon Row, who was excellent in the heart of the Port defence.

Ben Leech’s 25-yard chip hit the top of the crossbar for the hosts before Wendron took the lead with an untidy goal after 25 minutes when Chris Mulroy bundled the ball home in a crowded six-yard box, with the final touch appearing to come off his heel.

The visitors doubled their advantage five minutes before the break when Jack Stocker and Michael O’Neill combined neatly to release former Port player Reg Pearson, who beat the offside trap near the halfway line and raced clear to slot past home keeper James Wignall.

Just before half time Ben Mitchell produced an outstanding save from Matt Best, tipping the ball around the post after the Port striker had been teed up by Freddie Williams.

The hosts pressed hard to get back into the game in the second period but were unable to breach a miserly and resolute Wendron defence.

Liam Hunter was denied by Mitchell and Lewis Emsley grazed the crossbar but Charlie Davis’ men

stood firm to record their eighth victory of the season.
