Falmouth Town 1, Helston Ath 0

ROB Wearne was the toast of Town on Boxing Day after his goal ten 10 minutes from time settled this morning kick-off in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division of the SWPL.

New signing Ollie Walker, who now forms a quartet of county youth players in Town’s first team squad, kept his composure to roll the ball into the path of Wearne, who shot home from six yards out.

Town player-manager Andrew Westgarth said he was “absolutely delighted” with his team’s victory, while Blues boss Sid Taylor was disappointed with his side’s end product.

Taylor said: “I felt we dominated possession but we took the wrong option too many times in the final third. We just didn’t create enough, which is unlike us.”

The game could have been won by either side, but Helston top scorer Mark Goldsworthy was well marshalled by Tom Whipp and Joe Cooper, while Wearne had been kept quiet by Jason Roberts as both teams battled the blowy conditions.

Goldsworthy had the first presentable chance of the game but his shot on the run from 20 yards flew over the bar as Whipp put him under pressure.

Wearne then managed to turn Roberts after receiving Luke Tripconey’s pass but his shot went just beyond the far post.

Helston’s new signing from Illogan, keeper Barrie-John Wyatt then handled the ball outside the area to stop Andrew Westgarth in his tracks, but referee Derek Fox elected to book the 'keeper rather than send him off as other defenders were covering behind him.

On the half hour mark Wyatt then made a brave save to deny Wearne ten 10 yards out, coming out to dive at the striker’s feet as he set himself to shoot.

Two minutes later Dan Greet’s fine curling shot fell just the wrong side of the far post, before Ryan Barnes was called into action in the Falmouth goal, making a double save from Phil Cattran and then Hughie Howlett from the rebound.

Barnes kept the scoresheet clean again early in the second half when he made a close range save to deny Goldsworthy, before Greet missed from five yards out when he failed to convert Mark Hollands’ corner.

With an On the hour gone, mark a spectacular diving header from Roberts flew just past Barnes’ post, before Westgarth was withdrawn for Walker with 12 minutes to go.

The 16-year-old’s impact was immediate, when he brought the ball down in the penalty area and set up Wearne for the deciding goal.

Helston threw everything at Town in a tense finish, but they were unable to deny Town their eighth league win, a pre-season target that had been set by player-manager Westgarth.
