Falmouth U15 20pts v Hayle U15 10pts
On a day when the wingers were unlikely to see much of the ball, Falmouth welcomed Hayle
to Tregenver. The visitors made their intentions clear from the outset; using their big forwards to
target the areas around the breakdown and to play a limited ten man game. However, this restricted game plan was ultimately to prove unsuccessful.
Playing with the advantage of the wind, Falmouth worked a good position after ten minutes
which resulted in Joe Carmichael going over in the corner. The home side was more dangerous in
broken play, with forwards and backs interchanging very well. Josh Stevens, Jack Watts and Cameron Hopkins were a constant thorn in the side of the opposition, using their strength to snuff out their attacks and pose problems when carrying the ball. Billy Bateson added the first of his brace of tries midway through the half following a break of half the length of the pitch by hooker Jago.
The two packs continued to knock lumps out of each other for the remainder of the half but no further scores came.
Despite having the wind advantage, Hayle continued with keeping the ball in hand and
playing a tight game around the rucks and mauls. The tactic was manfully repelled, with the
Falmouth guards keeping their discipline and making sure that the opposition gained little in terms
of territory. While the half backs, Ned and Lennon kicked effectively into the wind keeping Falmouth
moving forward. It was from a chipped kick over the advancing Hayle backs from Lennon that Billy
was able to pick up and run forty yards to the line.
A nice move down the blindside from the restart, saw Hayle hit back almost immediately
and the game was still very much alive. Following an injury to Byron, Falmouth welcomed back Harry Medlin to the fold having enjoyed a sabbatical of some seven years. Lewis and Isaac were proving to
be a useful pairing on the flanks and their fitness began to show as Falmouth began to dominate
territory. Joe grabbed his second try following a surging run and the game was effectively won. Hayle powered their way over for a consolation try but the day was deservedly Falmouth`s.
