The 2015/16 season got underway for Falmouth U14’s with the first scheduled fixture away at Camborne.

The sun shone brightly and the pitch looked great in what promised to be an exciting game. The home side were ever gracious with the loan of players to make up the numbers for Falmouth who unfortunately had several players unavailable for the fixture.

The home side started briskly with a blindside move off a solid scrum inside the visitors half, recycled quickly to keep momentum to open the scoring out wide. From the restart Camborne regained possession and their livewire fly half broke through the Falmouth defence and set off downfield for an excellent solo effort.

This quick start by the home side had the visitors in trouble and they continued to pile on the pressure from a series of driving mauls, culminating with a penalty in which they choose to run using their powerful forwards to score the try.

Camborne added a fourth try as Falmouth bravely tried to run out of defence only to loose possession and allow another breach of their defence. But if the home side thought that their opponents were going to lie down they were about to be surprised.

Robust rucking produced a turnover and Falmouth quickly counter attacked to allow Guy Brooks to go over and make their mark on the game.

The early pace of the game now slowed as Falmouth clawed their way back in and started to get the measure of their much bigger opponents, making them work much harder to maintain possession and gain any field territory.

However, the home side still managed to add another brace of tries before the half time whistle brought a break to proceedings and an opportunity to take on some water in the sunny conditions.

The second half started at a slower pace as both sides set about their task with equal gusto. This time it was Falmouth who were first to get on the score sheet, from a scrum on their own 22m line they set off running out of defence down the blindside. Good momentum and recycling maintained possession as they made their way towards the try line to got their just reward.

The first half had taken its toll, Falmouth started losing players as they picked up injuries though again Camborne were happy to make up the numbers and ensure full teams on the field. As the visitors were having to reshuffle their players around the home side exposed some defensive lapses to add to their score. Falmouth came close on a few occasions but ultimately ran out of support players and weren’t able to convert their possession as efficiently as the home side.

At the final whistle Camborne applied the pressure on a defensive scrum to turn over possession and pile over the line to bring the game to an end with a 60:12 final score.
