CORNWALL’S Unicorns Counties Championship season came to a dramatic finale at Usk last night as Wales Minor Counties inflicted a crushing five wicket win with 90 minutes to spare.

They had been set an improbable 404 in a minimum of 85 overs but cruised to victory.

After opener Sam Pearce cracked 93 off 56 balls the home side were always way ahead of the rate.

Steffan Roberts got 50 before Gareth Ansell’s 79 and 133 not out from Sean Griffiths off 106 balls sealed Cornwall’s fate.

It was the highest ever successful run chase against Cornwall beating the 336-4 by Herefordshire in 1994.

It is only the third time the Duchy has conceded over 400 in the second innings.

The game was a memorable one for the Falmouth club who provided four players.

In addition to season ever present Christian Purchase and Antony Angove, late withdrawals on Saturday evening saw 17-year-old Jordan Thomas called up for his debut along with Kieran Rodda.

Thomas did well with the ball taking one for 36 off 12.4 overs in the first innings and he also picked up two in the second innings as well as making 20 with the bat.

Angove was injured and unable to bowl in the second innings.

Oxfordshire have won the Western title and Cornwall finish fourth behind Berkshire and Shropshire.
