FALMOUTH got back to winning ways with a comprehensive eight wicket defeat over title chasing Grampound Road at the Hine Downing Oval.

It will come of something a relief after suffering two narrow defeats against St Austell and Werrington in previous weeks.

Falmouth remain in seventh spot in the Jolly’s Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League table, but have the opportunity to climb this weekend with a double header.

The games postponed from 26th July, due to Cornwall’s Unicorns Trophy semi-final at Hertfordshire, are rescheduled for this Sunday, meaning Falmouth therefore have a weekend on the road, but thankfully relatively short trips.

Saturday’s game at Truro will see the home side looking to overtake leaders Werrington, who have a tough assignment at St Just, with the gap is currently just four points.

Then on Sunday, Falmouth are at Camborne, who are involved in a three-way relegation scrap with Penzance and Newquay.

Both games start at 12.30pm.

After electing to bat, Grampound Road were soon in trouble with Jordan Thomas and George Popperwell causing the problems.

Popperwell had David Hoskings caught by Stefan Churcher for 12 before trapping Alex May in front, making the score 15-2.

Thomas then had county skipper Matt Robins LBW and at 16-3, it was a great start for the home side.

Thomas followed up to have Tom Hughes caught behind for five and Popperwell then dismissed Charlie Hoskings for nine in similar fashion and when he bowled Chris Willett, 13, the visitors were in some strife at 41-6.

They recovered somewhat to get to 107 all out in the 49th over with Ernest Akhona Kula making top score of 19 and the last pair of Lewis Sanders and Jacob Dunstan adding 18.

Popperwell returned the superb economical figures of 11-5-9-4 while Thomas did his county ambitions no harm whatsoever taking three for 24 off 11 overs.

With an evening trip to Wales looming, Christian Purchase, opening the batting, hit 30 off 15 balls.

His county colleague Antony Angove had a little more time to pack, after falling fourth ball.

The victory was secured thanks to an unbroken 74 run stand between Callum Whitaker, who finished on 32 not out and Kieran Rodda, 26.

It came with 36 overs to spare with Alex Ridd took the two wickets at a cost of 38 runs.
