HIGHLY-RATED front row forward Tommy Phillips is the latest player to sign for the Cornish Pirates.

The Greene King IPA Championship club announced on Friday morning the prop who featured in Cornwall's successful County Championship campaign last season will join them from Redruth under their Player Development scheme.

Alongside the senior county side, Phillips has also represented Cornwall Under 20s and went to Hungary with the England Counties U20s earlier in the summer.

Phillips still lives in Cadgwith and first played rugby at Helston.

Pirates director of rugby Ian Davies said: "We feel Tommy is another Cornish youngster with a big future ahead of him.

"Having had a strong showing last season in National Two the basic rugby foundations are in place and it is now just a case of layering conditioning, game understanding and playing with a greater intensity on top to aid Tommy in pushing on in the professional game."
