A DRAMATIC finish at Beacon Parc on Saturday saw Helston escape with a tie against Wadebridge, in a game they might well have lost, writes Michael Weeks.

With Callington winning at Hayle and taking maximum points, the difference between the two sides has been cut to 12 points.

Helston take on fast improving St Gluvias on Saturday at home while Callington travel to St Minver this weekend.

The Saints will travel with confidence having won their last four games.

In a repeat of last year, when Helston won by two runs, this fixture went down to the last ball.

Having been put in on a drying pitch Helston loss Ross Leathley to Stuart Parkyn for nought.

Mark Jenkin lasted a little longer before being bowled by Charlie Ellis at 27-2.

Playing a skipper’s innings, Dan Jenkin battled well to make 38 off 75 balls.

Ellis broke the partnership however and Chris Martin quickly followed for 21.

Tommy Sturgess went for a single and when Alek Gill bowled Gavin Tregenza for 12, at 104-6 the home side had problems.

However, they were rescued as Werner Potgieter made 44, Ben Rule 26 and Tom Retallack 19 not out, batting out the full 50 overs to end on 202-9.

Ellis, Gill and Rob Centeni took two wickets each.

Matthew Jolliffe, 34, and Tom McLachlan added 60 for the Wadebridge first wicket before Tom Retallack got the breakthrough to remove Jolliffe with young Karl Leathley holding the catch on his first team debut.

Potgieter then ran out Ellis, Charlie McLachlan was LBW to captain Jenkin for nought and when the dangerous Nick Yelland followed in similar fashion for a third ball duck, Helston were right back in it at 85-4.

Opener Tom McLachlan, 60, and Antony Puliatti added 56 for the fifth wicket as the game took another twist.

Despite McLachlan getting run-out, the visitors looked to be closing in on victory just needing six off the last nine balls, with four wickets left.

However, Tregenza bowled Puliatti for 53 and then Jenkin, who finished with figures of three for 44, bowled Maycock for 26 to leave four needed off three balls. Two

A couple of singles followed to leave two required off the last ball.

Jenkin's yorker beat Tom Brooks but also Karl Leathley behind the stumps.

Coming back for the second Brooks slipped on the turn to be run-out by Tregenza in the most dramatic of endings, with the wicket meant an additional eight points for Helston.

How important might that be come September?
