IT is all to play for in the County Division One title race after Helston lost their unbeaten record at Callington on Saturday, writes Michael Weeks.

As he has done against so many teams already this season, overseas star Murray Workman proved to be the deciding factor as he blasted to 143 not out to send Helston to their fate.

The gap has been narrowed to just sixteen points and it’s not been that close between the two sides since the first week in June.

After electing to bat Helston lost Werner Potgieter to Jim Shorten with the score at 15, Mark Jenkin was caught and bowled by Josh Murray-Dustan for 28 and Chris Martin was bowled by the youngster for two.

At 69-3, there was work to do for the visitors.

Captain Dan Jenkin found a willing partner in Ben Rule and the pair put on 84 for the fourth wicket.

Jenkin dominated the stand before being trapped LBW by Alex Robinson for 72.

This brought Tommy Sturgess to the crease and in typical fashion he hit five sixes and two fours in his 49, off just 35 balls.

Rule, in a supporting role, contributed ten in a partnership of 61 before Aidan Libby had Sturgess LBW and then bowled Gavin Tregenza first ball.

A unbeaten half century was reached by Rule off 86 balls before the innings closed on 238-8 with Jim Shorten leading the bowling figures, taking three for 37.

Callington slipped to 27-3 with Steve Eddy getting Toby May LBW for one.

Sturgess then struck with two big wickets, removing James Long for three and Joe White for five.

A lot now depended on South African Workman and again he did not fail to deliver.

With Alex Robinson, who scored 34, the pair added 135 for the fourth wicket.

Workman went on to hit five sixes and 13 fours in his 143 not out to secure victory with two overs to spare.

It is the fifth time he has passed 140 in the League this year.

Sturgess took three for 56.
