DAN Jenkin said he is "thrilled" to see Helston remain unbeaten in the league at the season's halfway stage.

With 11 games gone, the club's first team have a 27 point lead at the top of the County Division One table with nine wins after they defeated St Gluvias away on Saturday by 79 runs.

Their latest victory came after a solid innings of 61 from Ben Rule helped Helston to 229, having at one stage looked a touch shaky on 116-4, before Jenkin picked up five wickets as the Saints' fell to 150 all out.

With all eyes now looking on Helston's promotion push, their skipper admitted extra pressure is on them, but he believes they will like being chased by rival teams.

Jenkin said: "A couple of weeks ago, we were saying if we could get to halfway unbeaten then it would be a wonderful achievement, so I'm delighted to have achieved this.

"We knew the wicket at St Gluvias is a 230/240 wicket and it was Ben's innings which really saw us over the line as he just stuck around.

"St Gluvias are a better team than the table suggests and we knew it would be tricky as they just like a lot of the teams in the league feel like they have a point to prove against us because we are top.

"But I think we quite enjoy that feeling and we are giving everyone a good game of cricket to prove we deserve to be top and now we just have to maintain that."

On Saturday, Jenkin won the toss and elected to bat but he and fellow opener Ross Leathley were both out with just 20 runs on the board.

Chris Martin whacked 60 off 42 balls, with four sixes and eight fours, but when he was given out LBW, the innings needed another good score to take them to a decent total.

It promptly came from Rule who made sure the ship steadied as he stayed at the crease for 88 balls to chip in with a half century.

A good enough start was made by the Saints in their innings as they reached 66-1, but then the spin of Jenkin and South African Werner Potgieter saw wickets start tumbling.

Following a middle order collapse, the hosts found themselves on 100-7 and staring defeat in the face.

Scott Kellow's knock of 52 was the home side's highlight in their innings as Jenkin finished with figures of five for 18 off 5.1 overs.

Fourth placed St Minver are Helston's next opponents on Saturday, while St Gluvias host Ludgvan.
