A LONG serving rugby administrator from Cornwall has said he is "deeply honoured" to have been awarded a British Empire Medal.

Mike Gee was among the recipients in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to the sport in the South West, which has seen him involved for 50 years.

He is currently the region's co-ordinating secretary and has held a number of committee positions over the years.

Before this, Gee was also a regular player for St Ives where during 13 seasons he racked up 500 appearances and more than 200 tries.

After news of his BEM award was announced, Gee, 70, said: "I'm delighted and deeply honoured but I could not have achieved this award without the support of all the league officials in the South West, past and present."

Alongside his rugby commitments, Gee also runs Sports Travel South West with his daughter Nicola.
