CELEBRATIONS were in full flow on Saturday as Lizard Argyle received the Trelawny League Division One trophy, writes Steve Glover.

The prize won with two games to spare by the side was presented to them at Beacon Terrace after they finished the 2014/15 season off with a 2-0 victory over Trevenson United.

A large crowd came to the match and watched club captain Marc Alden lift up the trophy which was handed over by outgoing league fixtures secretary Gerald Sobey.

Only two losses have been dealt to Argyle during the campaign, against Wendron United Reserves on the opening day before Camborne School of Mines beat them on May 2.

Player-manager Craig Pollard was full of praise for the team's performance this season.

He said: "Me and my assistant, Ben Evans, would like to thank everyone for the support we have received over the campaign.

"Now we can look forward to the challenge of playing in the Trelawny League Premier Division."

There was still something to play for on Saturday as the visitors, who gave their hosts a customary guard of honour onto the pitch, knew a victory would see them jump from third to second place in the table.

A high tempo was applied to the opening moments of the game by United with plenty of pressure being put on the hosts.

However, the defence who have conceded just 29 goals this season could not be broken down while goalkeeper Luc Evans was in fine form between the sticks.

Their efforts kept United at bay in the first half and after the interval, a couple of changes had to be made in the midfield after a nasty clash of heads forced a player from either side to require stitches and a hospital trip.

Pollard went on during the second half as Argyle looked to push on and in the 78th minute, the breakthrough was finally made as Ash Copeland slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Hayden Dark doubled the lead in injury time to help get the party started.
