BRAGGING rights remain with Redruth after they smashed their way past neighbours Camborne on Saturday to retain the Rodda’s Cup.

The hosts saw Ben Allen get red carded just before half time, although they were allowed to put an extra man back on after the break, and the Reds eventually ran home to a 55-5 victory in front of a bumper Easter weekend crowd of 456.

The visitors bagged eight tries during the afternoon while fly-half Murray Westren booted six conversions and a penalty between the posts to pick up the man-of-the-match award.

Taron Peacock thought he had opened the scoring for the Cherry and Whites early on only to see his dot down ruled out by the officials as Alex Ducker was judged to have been in touch when he passed to his scrum-half.

Redruth’s pack dominated the game and helped their side get the scoreboard ticking over in the 16th minute when they drove over a scrum from five metres out for number eight Kyle Marriott to ground the ball down.

Town’s misery from going behind was compounded immediately when Greg Goodfellow nipped through a gap from a ruck to dive over the whitewash and not long after this, hooker Richard Brown got a try as the forwards mauled their way in.

Just before half time, Westren won a chase for the ball to score another try, but a melee ensued with punches thrown between both sets of players with referee Kevin Williams showing red to home openside flanker Allen.

Westren proceeded to kick a penalty home awarded after the conversion to send Redruth in with a 31-0 half time lead.

By now the game was dead and buried for Camborne and after the break Neilson Webber added a fifth Reds try.

An appearance was made for Town by their former star Joel Matavesi who now plies his trade in Swansea for the Ospreys alongside his brother and Fijian international Josh.

He could not breakthrough the Redruth defence and further tries from Lewis Vinnicombe, Robin Wedlake and Jack Kessell were added to the scoreboard.

There would be some consolation though for the hosts as in the last play of the game, Gareth Mankee crossed the line to make sure the afternoon was not a whitewash.
