PAUL Murray said his Wendron United side are ready for their Combination League Cup Final clash on Sunday after thrashing St Just 5-0 at Underlane on Saturday.

Goals from Chris Mulroy, Matt Buchan, Luke Wort and Billy Stone helped Dron move back into second place in the league, going above Ludgvan who they meet at Kellaway Park in the final.

Neither side have won the trophy since it was first played for in 1959/60 and Murray said excitement is building around the camp.

“It is the first time the club has reached this particular cup final so it is nice for the players that they have already made a little bit of history,” he said.

“I think it is fair to say a few of the guys are a bit nervous and in all honesty I'm nervous too as we are coming up against a good side in Ludgvan who have some quality players, so it will be very tough.

“But in some respects it is good to know we are coming up against a strong side in the final as it means we are less likely to be complacent like you might do against a weaker team.

“It would be nice to get a trophy under our belts as it will spur us on for the final few league games and put a bit of pressure on sides like Mullion who we're trying to overhaul at the top as we'll have a prize already and they won't.”

It took a while for Dron to settle into proceedings against St Just, who set up a very stubborn defence just three weeks after they had been turned over 6-0 by the same side.

However, in the 35th minute Matt Rose was brought down in the penalty area and Mulroy converted the spot-kick.

After the half time break, Dron looked more comfortable with young striker Buchan doubling the lead in the 60th minute with a header before adding his side's third after Steve Brewer's lovely through ball.

By now the resilient defence of St Just had their heads down and Wort scored Dron's fourth goal before Stone finished off the rout.

Reflecting on the performance, Murray said: “We weren't at our best, but it was good to get five on the board in the end.

“St Just made it difficult for us at the start but once we broke them down we took off from there.”
