YOUTH will get a chance to shine through for Cornwall in this year’s County Championship campaign.

The Duchy’s coaching set up said they have been pleased with the development of young Cornish rugby players as they step up their preparations for the Bill Beaumont Cup.

This has been boosted recently by the Cornwall Under 20s side reaching the semi final stage of the County Championship.

If the side beat Yorkshire when they meet at Camborne on March 15, it will book a date at the iconic Twickenham stadium in May potentially a few weeks before the senior team.

Cornwall’s assistant coach Ian Morgan, who has also been part of the U20s set up this year, said a lot of good young players are coming through at the moment and if they are good enough, a chance to wear the famous black and gold jersey will happen.

Morgan said: “The Under 20s are on a good run themselves at the moment with the semi final in a couple of weeks.

“There is a big buzz around Cornish rugby at the moment and if we can get both the 20s and senior team to Twickenham this season, then that would be fantastic.

“Players who I think will be knocking on the door from the Under 20s will be Tommy Phillips, who has been outstanding for us and at Redruth, and Brad Howe who is a very good, strong ball carrier who I think has benefitted a lot from training at the Cornish Pirates full-time.

“We have to start moving forward with the times and look at the next crop of players coming through and if the young guys are good enough, they deserve their chance to wear the shirt, so the ball is in the court of a lot of senior players to keep hold of their place.”
