PAUL Murray feels his Wendron United side missed a huge opportunity to make the Cornwall Senior Cup semi finals for the first time on Saturday.

Luke Wort’s missed penalty with the penultimate kick in a penalty shoot-out proved costly as South West Peninsula League Premier side Callington Town went through to the semis.

The match finished 2-2 after 120 minutes and it was Dron who created the majority of the chances at their Underlane home.

However, they were unable to capitalise on these moments which saw them hit the woodwork and captain Justin Miles have a first half penalty saved.

Murray believed the performance from his side was better than their higher league opponents and it might be a game which may always be a “what if” for many of the players.

“I don’t think many of the guys will get a better chance of making the Senior Cup semi finals,” Murray said.

“Maybe Callington were a tad fitter than us.

“But overall I don’t think there was much between the sides and if a neutral had turned up and watched, they wouldn’t have been able to tell who the team from the higher division was.

“We probably raised our game and we know there is a lot of quality in our team, but now we just have to go and finish it off.”

Justin Miles sees his penalty get saved in the first half by Callington goalkeeper Sam Borthwick.

Despite being knocked out, Murray believes there is a lot of confidence for his team to take out of the game and put into the league’s title race.

Murray said: “When you have shown the sort of quality which makes you compete against teams like Callington, it suggests that anything in the Combination League shouldn’t really bother us.

“If we can maintain that work rate, application and concentration into the rest of our league campaign, then we will definitely be in with a good shout of being champions at the end of the season.

“Mullion are up there at the moment and I cannot see them dropping many points though, so it will be tough.”
