HISTORY books will have to wait for a revision once again as Wendron United were knocked out of the Cornwall Senior Cup.

Despite it being Valentine's Day, there was to be no cup romance in this quarter final as Callington Town went through after winning 5-4 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes at Underlane.

Luke Wort was the only player to miss his spot-kick in the shoot-out, with his effort smashing into the left hand post.

Luke Avis-Rhiordhan then stepped up and sent the South West Peninsula League Premier side through to the semi finals.

Overall, the hosts created far more chances and should have really progressed, but were left to rue a number of missed opportunities.

Chris Mulroy had chipped the ball onto the crossbar before Town took the lead against the run of play when Kirk Smith's shot from just outside the penalty area took a deflection on the way through a crowded area in the 20th minute.

But six minutes later Justin Miles put Dron back on level terms when he slammed the ball into the net after Steve Brewer's corner from the left wing was flicked on to the back post.

The skipper had the chance to make it 2-1 on the half hour when Wort was brought down in the box for a penalty, but Sam Borthwick saved the kick.

In the second half, Ben Langton went close for Town when he headed the ball twice onto the crossbar in quick succession, but with ten minutes left it looked like Dron would be making history as Justin Searle hammered home after getting on the end of a corner.

Heads appeared to be switched off though from the hosts as two minutes later, a free kick from Gary Williams 35 yards out was flicked on by Ryan Lucassi and drifted into the net.

On tired legs, Dron tried to push forward in extra time with Wort going closest when he thumped a shot on target with Borthwick forced into a save before he headed wide moments later.

It led to a penalty shoot-out and Wort's missed kicked spelt the end of the cup run for Dron at the same stage for a second year in row.
