IT was a New Year’s to forget for Helston as their opening match of 2015 saw them get destroyed 104-0 at Tribute Cornwall One leaders Newquay Hornets.

Saturday’s clash featured 16 tries from a strong home team who maintained their 100 per cent win record for the season, which comes to a close at the end of the month.

A hat-trick in the first ten minutes from winger Perry Hughes set Newquay on their way with the visitors failing to match their opponents in the scrum nor contain powerful tackles from the back row and runs of the backs.

Further tries from Dick Burns, Reece Hughes, Frazer Kellythorn and Aaron McPherson helped the Hornets build a 43-0 lead at half-time.

If Helston thought they had dealt with the attacking moves of their hosts in the first 40 minutes, there were soon mistaken as Newquay hit the throttle harder after the break.

Wet and windy weather conditions were playing into the Hornets’ hands for the second half, but their display was still good to watch.

Both the Hughes added a try each to their earlier scores as did Burns and Kellythorn.

Dan Johns grabbed a brace in the half while skipper Ryan Johns also popped over the line for a try before centre Marc Richards, playing his 100th game since returning to the Hornets, finished off the scoring.

Roseland’s 25-7 victory at home to Stithians means Helston’s miserable day was completed as they dropped to the bottom of the table.

Fifth placed Perranporth are the Blues’ next opponents when they meet up at Clodgey Lane on Saturday.
