FOOTBALL chiefs in Cornwall are asking clubs to have their say in proposals for a new cup competition.

A consultation has been launched by the Cornwall FA for opinions to be given on their plan to introduce a third Saturday cup from the 2016/17 season.

The competition would be known as the Intermediate Cup and sit between the Senior and Junior Cups in terms of level.

In the survey, officials from teams in the Duchy are being asked to give their views on two proposals, with the first involving a tournament with 85 entrants while the other would allow for 68 participating teams.

Clubs from the Jolly’s Combination League and Trelawny League would be allowed to enter alongside teams from East Cornwall and Duchy leagues.

Richard Pallot, Cornwall FA’s governance manager, said: “After initial feedback from our clubs and leagues, we are exploring adding an extra Saturday cup competition to the existing Senior and Junior Cups.

“Once we have received more feedback from the online survey, the matter will be taken to the council to be voted upon.”

If the first proposal is agreed on, it would mean only the top six finishing first teams from Combination League would be given entry to the Senior Cup.

However, if the second plan is green-lighted, only teams in the South West Peninsula League would take part in the Senior Cup.

A mixed reaction has been received over the plans from local football clubs.

Wendron United manager Paul Murray believes the structure of the leagues should be looked at rather than the cups.

Murray said: “I’d prefer to see the divisions have their set-ups altered like decreasing the size of the Combination League.

“I don’t like the idea of taking the Combo sides out completely as it takes away some of the romance from the cup and it strikes me as being a bit of snobbish of teams in the higher leagues.

“It would take some of the gloss off the cup in the same way as it would if they stopped non-league sides from entering the FA Cup.”
