CORNWALL’S Football Association celebrated their 125th anniversary with a 4-2 win against the Royal Navy on Wednesday night.

The match played at St Blazey was arranged as part of the landmark birthday celebrations with a representative side put together.

Helston Athletic’s Hugh Howlett and Porthleven’s Dan Tarrant featured in the Navy’s team.

It would prove to be a dominant performance from the Cornishmen who were hard to breakdown and created the majority of the chances.

Roy Emmerson looked to be in good form too for the Navy as the goalkeeper made crucial saves from Jared Sims and Liam Eddy in the first half.

He could not prevent Cornwall taking the lead though in the 37th minute when a long ball was nodded on by Chris Reski for St Austell team-mate Sims, who chipped it over Emmerson.

The second goal had a distinctly Poltair Park look to it as well nine minutes after the break as Neil Slateford sent in a brilliant cross to Eddy, who pulled the ball back to Ollie Brokenshire to fire home.

St Austell’s Martin Watts scored the best goal of the night five minutes later as he sent a rasping left footed strike from a free kick 25 yards out over the wall and into the net, leaving Emmerson stranded.

The Navy’s goalie did pull off a couple more good saves before the end stopping Eddy and Jonny Ludham from extending the lead any further.

Phil Lowry hit the post for Cornwall before in the last minute of normal time he did make it 4-0 as his shot dribbled in after Emmerson got a glove to the ball.

Overall it had been a poor evening for the Navy who had seen their best chances coming from tame long range efforts.

They did add a bit of shine to proceedings though as Mike Turnbull scored twice in injury time, turning and shooting after getting on the end of a corner before making the most of a defensive mix up to send the ball into an unguarded net.
