DESPITE only 14 points being scored, Helston and Camborne School of Mines featured in an entertaining 7-7 draw in the Tribute Cornwall One league on Saturday.

There was just one try scored by each side in the game at Clodgey Lane, but this did not delete the drama which can be produced in rugby games of this nature.

Helston, fresh of their opening weekend victory at Stithians, started the stronger as their forwards drove the ball deep into CSM territory, but some strong defensive work by the visitors kept the hosts at bay.

In the build-up to the match, CSM had not been blessed with a fantastic day as their already injury hit squad picked up another four absentees in the warm-up.

Later on in the first half CSM were able to manoeuvre their way into the Helston half only to find their opponent’s defending in just as fine form.

The ball moved end-to-end, but neither team could break the deadlock before half time.

Both sets of players continued in a similar vein after the break before finally the scoreboard got ticking over.

It came from the hands of George Bayless, who went in at the right time to intercept a pass before running 30 metres to chalk up the try, which Rhun Davies converted.

Helston kept on piling pressure on a strong CSM defence with Matt Penrose, Dave Gilbert and Will Curtis making good carries for the home team.

This finally brought them success ten minutes from time as from 15 metres out they got a driving maul going, allowing hooker Craig Saunders to score.

Full-back Calvin Warwick added the conversion and Helston pushed forward again looking for another score, but CSM kept up their good work to prevent any further points.
